Penrith move second in NRL after a 38-12 win over Parramatta

With the table-topping Bulldogs having the bye, the Panthers took full advantage with a triumph that lifted them to second in the table after the Manly Sea Eagles also lost.

The Eels beat Penrith 32-16 in Round 4 but a repeat never looked likely as Parramatta had their misery compounded by injuries to Nathan Peats and Darcy Lussick.

And it was later confirmed that Peats would miss the rest of the season with a knee problem.

Josh Mansour, James Segeyaro and Tyrone Peachey all scored first-half tries for the victors, who led 16-0 at the break.

Peachey and Mansour crossed again after the break to post doubles, while Jamie Soward added a late try to go with his five goals.

Both of Parramatta’s tries came in the last 10 minutes in a miserable performance from Brad Arthur’s side.

Penrith’s win saw them move ahead of Manly after they lost 36-10 to the Brisbane Broncos on Sunday.

Jack Reed and Dale Copley starred for the victors with two tries each, condemning the Sea Eagles to just their fourth defeat of the season.

Daniel Tupou bagged a hat-trick on his return from State of Origin as the Sydney Roosters beat the Canberra Raiders 26-12 on Saturday, while a depleted Melbourne Storm outfit were kept scoreless by the North Queensland Cowboys later that day.

The Cowboys won 22-0 in Townsville against a Storm side badly missing star full-back Billy Slater, who suffered a shoulder injury in Wednesday’s Origin clash.

New Zealand Warriors captain Simon Mannering capped his 200th game for the club ” and 100th as skipper ” with a double in a 38-18 win over the Newcastle Knights on Sunday.

And the South Sydney Rabbitohs ended Round 12 on Monday with a 29-10 triumph over the St George-Illawarra Dragons, as they made it four wins from five.

The Bulldogs, Cronulla Sharks, Gold Coast Titans and Wests Tigers all had the bye.
