Nairo Quintana targets Tour de France after Giro d’Italia win

The Movistar rider was confirmed as the pink jersey winner on Sunday as the final stage from Gemona del Friuli to Trieste was won by Luka Mezgec (Giant-Shimano).

Quintana becomes only the second Colombian winner of a major cycling tour after Luis Herrera won the Vuelta a Espana in 1987, and he hopes to add to his victories at the Tour de France in the future.

The 24-year-old stayed out of trouble on stage 21 of this year’s race and crossed the line with a two minutes 58 second advantage over compatriot Rigoberto Uran, leaving Quintana delighted to have achieved a childhood dream.

“It could not have gone better for me,” he said. “It was a marvellous Giro and it suited me and my team very well.

“It’s difficult to explain how happy this makes me inside. It is one of the happiest days of my life, thanks to my team for making this dream possible.

“My next goal will be to win the Tour de France one day.”

Quintana has already showed his ability on Le Tour with a second-place finish last year behind Chris Froome, while also claiming the mountain and young rider classification titles.
