Wesley Sneijder excited by new Holland formation to face Ghana in friendly

Wesley Sneijder is excited by the prospect of testing Holland’s new 5-3-2 formation against World Cup rivals Ghana in Saturday’s friendly in Rotterdam.

Coach Louis van Gaal has opted for a 5-3-2 system ahead of the tournament in Brazil, his last with the national team before taking over at Manchester United.

Galatasaray midfielder Sneijder is set to play in behind a front two of Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben and is looking forward to pitting his wits against Ghana.

Asked how the system suited him, Sneijder told a press conference: ‘I feel that it is good, both in possession and without possession of the ball.

‘Within a week I have seen a lot of progress. I’m really curious to see how we are going to play against Ghana. We can not expect 100 per cent perfection, so it still will not be all rosy.

‘But ultimately it is the first (World Cup) match against Spain soon and then we must be ready.’

Holland were drawn in perhaps the toughest pool in Brazil, along with Spain, who beat them in the final four years ago, Chile and Australia.

Ajax’s Daley Blind is reportedly due to start at left-back against Ghana instead of Patrick van Aanholt, the Chelsea player who has impressed on loan at Vitesse Arnhem.

Ghana, who reached the quarter-finals in South Africa before their penalty shoot-out loss to Uruguay, also have a tough group in Brazil, up against Germany, Portugal and the United States.
