A three-day workshop for trainers on hand Washing With Soap (HWWS) and Household Water Treatment and Storage has commenced in Wechiaw in the Upper West Region.
The workshop which is being funded by UNICEF in collaboration with Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) is aimed at training persons in communities to be ambassadors of good health through the promotion of the HWWS Strategy.
Briefing participants in the opening session, the Regional Environmental Health Officer, Henry Bagah urged them to stay committed to the cause of reducing physical human contact with their own fecal matter.
Mr. Bagah advised the participants to take the training seriously because they are required to go and train others who have not gotten the opportunity.
In the opening session, Officer in charge of the workshop from CWSA in the Upper West region, Ato Kwansa, revealed that proper hand washing reduces diarrhea by about 25%.
According to him, per every 1000 death for under 5 children in Ghana, 76 of them came as a result of pneumonia and or diarrhoea related cases.
In an interview with Joy News, WASH Specialist from UNICEF, Samuel Amoako-Mensah expressed delight with the level of commitment shown by participants.
He said based on strategies devised by the CWSA in implementing the project, studies have shown its effectiveness adding that UNICEF was very happy to support such a cause.
The campaign is being replicated in the Nadowli, Jirapa, Lambussie-Kaani, Daffiame-Issa-Bussie, Sissala West as well the Wa East Districts respectively.
