Nigeria FA unhappy with Ghana debtor Glo over defaulting sponsorship payments

The Nigerian FA are frustrated by Glo’s persistent failures in honouring its side of a sponsorship agreement – a year after the Ghana FA ditched the telecommunications firm for the same reason.

The NFF are supposed to earn N350m (in excess $2.1m) from Glo annually for the upkeep of the national teams.

This amount per the contract was supposed to have been paid to the NFF as a lump sum at the beginning of every year.

But Globacom have defaulted in making the payment – paying only three quarters of the amount due the NFF after several appeals.

‘They only paid half of that [of the total amount due], and after numerous appeals to them, they returned with half of the other half for a total of N262.5million [about $1.61m],’ a top NFF Executive Committee member told KickoffNigeria.

‘It is frustrating for us that in a World Cup year when need all our major sponsors to be behind us because of the capital intensive nature of the preparations, we can’t get our money.

‘Supporting teams is not just about sending goodwill messages whenever a team is heading for a major competition. It is also about doing what you are contracted to do.’

The situation has left the NFF contemplating on whether to continue with their relationship with Glo when the contract is up in July.

This was the same situation that befell the Ghana FA – when it had to take the bold decision not to renew its sponsorship agreement with Glo for the Ghana Premier League.

The telecommunications firm are still indebted to the Ghana FA to the tune of $5.5m.

The GFA have decided to take Glo to court to retrieve its money but issues have died down temporarily due to the 2014 World Cup which begins in a fortnight in Brazil.
