Ghana and Africa’s lone representative at this year’s Blue Stars/FIFA Youth Cup Asante Kotoko placed 5th in the 10-team tournament after beating Greek side Olympiakos 2-0 in their final game of the competition.
Kotoko, who had lost their two opening games to Benfica and FC Zurich respectively, came back to secure a massive 3-0 win over host Blue Stars and a goalless draw with Spanish side Villarreal earlier on Thursday, May 29, before completing the competition with a crucial 2-0 win over their counterparts from Greece to place 5th on the rankings.
The Blue Stars/FIFA Youth Cup is organized by FIFA every year in Switzerland to enable scouts spot talents from the various clubs around the world.
The tournament has therefore produced world class players such as reigning FIFA World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Ricardo Kaka, Ryan Giggs, Iker Casillas, Augustine ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha, etc.
