TENSION IS said to be mounting at Atwima Boaso near Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, over the rightful successor to the late chief of the town.

Opanin Kwaku Addo, Abusuapanin of the Asona family, said at a press conference on Tuesday that the town folks were living in fright.

He has consequently appealed to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who owns all lands in the region, to intervene to forestall any brawl.

Opanin Addo also urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Chief Justice, the National Security Coordinator and the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) to come to the aid of the inhabitants of the town.

He alleged that the Akyempimhene, Oheneba Adusei Poku, recently tried to no avail to impose one Nana Kusi Bimpong on them as chief.

He indicated that he as the Abusuapanin as well as the queen mother, Nana Afrah Saah Pokua, knew nothing about the enstoolment of Nana Kusi Bimpong.

He said the family therefore swore the Great Oath of Otumfuo which prevented the Akyempimhene from showing Nana Kusi Bimpong to the Asantehene as the chief of the town.

The Abusuapanin recalled that the family took that last minute action because Nana Kusi Bimpong is not a royal and so he could not be selected as their chief.

He explained that royals of the Atwima Boaso Stool are from the Asona family, whilst Nana Kusi Bimpong is from the Agona family.

According to him, the Akempimhene traditionally, doesn’t select a chief for the town and so they were surprised by his action, which he claimed was creating some trouble among the people.

Opanin Addo noted that the atrocities being meted out to the hapless people of the town were getting too much and so Otumfuo should intervene.

He underscored that his wish was for the Asantehene to determine who the original heirs to the Atwima Boaso Stool are, for peace to prevail.

According to him, Nana Kusi Bimpong had provoked them on countless occasions but they did not respond because they respect the laws of the land as well as the traditional set-up.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Nana Kusi Bimpong stated emphatically that all that Opanin Kwaku Addo had said about him were false.

According to him, he (Nana Kusi Bimpong) is a true royal of the Atwima Boaso Stool and so he is eligible to mount the throne as the chief of the town.

He rather claimed that Opanin Kwaku Addo and the other members of the Asona family are not royals of the area.

Nana Kusi Bimpong said there was a dispute over who should succeed the late chief of the town and the matter was sent to Otumfuo’s court.

The Asantehene, he said, formed a committee whose membership were prominent chiefs, to adjudicate the matter peacefully.

He mentioned Otumfuo’s Kyeame, Antwi Boasiako; Nana Amponsah Kwah, Sewiahene and Nkosohene as members of the committee.

He said after thoroughly going through the case and listening to the feuding parties, he (Nana Kusi Bimpong) was declared as the right chief of the town.

He said he had since the last two months been enstooled as chief of the area, adding that he had been ruling the town peacefully.

Nana Kusi Bimpong flatly debunked allegations that he was using stoutly-built people, popularly known as ‘machomen,’ to terrorize the people, adding that he is peace-loving chief.
