Asante Kotoko’s successful defence of their Premier League title is under threat following a protest lodged against Aduana Stars.
Medeama have filed a case against the relegation-threatened side which could see second-placed Heart of Lions gain points to smash Kotoko’s unassailable lead at the top of the Premier League.
Kotoko had been declared champions of the Ghanaian top flight for the third successive time following last weekend’s 2-1 win at New Edubiase.
That vital win in Berkwai saw the Porcupine Warriors go seven points clear off Heart of Lions with two games remaining.
The Kumasi-based side will however have to put their celebrations on hold as the nature of the protest launched by Medeama against Aduana Stars could see Lions gain three points.
‘We cannot as at now say for sure that Kotoko have won the league because of a protest lodged by Medeama against Aduana Stars,’ Premier League Board chairman Welbeck Abra-Appiah told Metro FM.
‘The outcome of that protest could have an effect on the league standings as second-placed Hearts of Lions could gain some points.
‘That will mean Kotoko cannot be considered champions pending the outcome of the protest as things stand.’
Medeama want nine points chunked off Aduana Stars’ points tally on the charge they failed to pay a fine in an earlier defeat in a disciplinary case within the stipulated 14-day period.
A club which fails to pay its fines within the stipulated period according to regulations governing the Premier League forfeits ensuing matches.
This means Aduana Stars’ wins against Berekum Chelsea, Heart of Lions and Medeama could be reversed in favour of their opponents.
