A member of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) and former Member of Parliament for Asokwa constituency Maxwell Kofi Jumah has described Ghana’s Electoral Commission as the “most not transparent” in the African continent despite some countries within the continent having no such independent body to carry out electoral process.
He argued that until the clause in the constitution which gives the President power to appoint the chairman of the commission is expunge, the credibility of the commission will continue to dent.
The former legislator said the job for chairman of the commission should be well advertise for application and the selection and appointment of the most qualify candidate should be done by the judicial council and not parliament or the president.
He suggested that the chairman should have a maximum term of 6-yrs where they can reapply.
“The appointment shouldn’t coincide with the election of the president”
He alleges that Electoral Commission since 1993 have been very clouded and not translucent which permit all sort of quagmires.
The NPP has been unbalanced since it was trounced in the last general election where it took legal action against the electoral commission for irregularities, omissions and commissions.
Members of the party has since upbraid the commission on various platforms and still maintain that the EC contributed massively to their defeat.
The outspoken ex-MP therefore believes that organizing and conducting elections should be transparent. He added that electoral documents should be accessible and available for public scrutiny.
