Dumping Site Chokes Manhyia

Residents of Atwima Manhyia in the Atwima Nwabiagya District of the Ashanti region are complaining of a land filled site posing severe health risk to people in the area.

The site lies on the Kumasi – Sunyani highway with a nursing training college and the community’s basic school close by.

According to the residents, the pungent smell and the smoke that emanates from the land fill site is making the place a living hell for inhabitants and passersby.

Some of the residents who spoke to ultimate radio complained bitterly about the smoke that engulfs the area any time they begin to burn the garbage.

‘The fumes coming from the site are very dangerous and there are schools like the St Peters boarding school, a nursing training college, the Royal and God First basic schools as well as some food vendors and fitters all along this road.

The assembly must really do something to salvage the situation here,’ a resident complained.

‘About three o’clock, they begin burning the rubbish and no one breathes easy here. When we are driving past, all our passengers cough and we can’t even see ahead through the thick smoke,’ a driver lamented.

Ultimate Radio’s investigations revealed that the Assembly is using the site against the will of the land owner whose complaints about the health risk have fallen on deaf ears.

All attempts to get the District Chief Executive for Atwima Nwabiagya, Nana Asare Bediako who had earlier promised to attend to the situation has so far proved futile.
