Model Girls’ Essay Competition

The second edition of the Model Girls’ Essay Competition is scheduled to come on June10-13 under the topic ‘What are some Innovative Ways of Improving Gender Equality in Ghana’.

Four hundred students aged 10-14 years from 15 selected Junior High schools in the Greater-Accra Region will participate in this year’s competition.

The schools include Ringway Estate JHS, La Yahoushua School, Osu St. Peters Roman Catholic, Osu Presbyterian Preparatory School and BOD Basic School. The rest are Sea Shell Preparatory School, Flagstaff House School, Ebenezer Preparatory School, Association Community International School and Tiny Flower School.

The event is being organized by Insight Foundation Ghana (IFG), in collaboration with Ghana Education Service, Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and the United Nations Information Centre, Accra.

This follows the success of last year’s edition and the recognition IFG received as among four organizations in the country to have organized writing competitions in the country in 2013. ‘We are excited that United Nations Information Centre, Accra, has partnered us once again’ says Andrews Dowuona, the Executive Director of IFG.

The main objective of this year’s competition is to sensitize the public and create awareness on the issue of gender while helping female students to enhance their research and writing skills.

The competition also creates a platform for girls to reflect on their lives and recommend the best solution for their challenges. It is to inspire, motivate and empower girls at the basic level while improving their reading and writing skills and rewarding them for their ingenuity and creativity.

The top three essays will be awarded books prizes from Ghana Book Trust, Certificate at a special event to mark International Day of the Girl Child in October this year. The participating schools whose students attain the top three positions will also be awarded prizes.

About Model Girl’s Essay Competition
The competition initiated by IFG in 2013 in commemoration of the United Nations Day of the Girl Child, is an annual writing competition that seeks to Improve the reading and writing skills of girls and reward them for their ingenuity and creativity, Promote the cause of women especially young girls, through life skills training and team building exercise, networking and mentoring programmes with seasoned accomplished female leaders and Encourage students to explore new ideas on human rights.
