African Youth Games: Athletics takes centre stage on Day 7 in Botswana


Athletics takes centre stage on Day 7 of the African Youth Games at the National Stadium in Gaborone.

Ghana is being represented by 10 athletes consisting of sprinters, middle distance runners and field event athletes.

The following Ghanaian athletes will be in action on day one of the competition:

Long jump heats – Richard Seklorwu
100m heats -Janet Mensah
800m heats -Martha Bissah
3000m heats -Sarah Owu
Cycling:
Ghana’s Frank Akuffo placed 25th overall in the Individual Time Trial event at the ongoing African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana on Tuesday.

Akuffo clocked 32: 53:56 in the hotly contested event which was won by South Africa’s Stefan De Bod in 26:51:99.

The youngster is set to compete in the 104km Road Race on Thursday.

Table Tennis:
Isaac Amoako and Eva Adom Amankwah lost their quarter final game in the mixed doubles after going down 2:0 to Egypt on Tuesday.

The two players lost their singles events to their more experienced Egytian counterparts.

This was their last opportunity for the two players to win a medal in the table tennis competition, after advancing to the quarter final stage in both the team and individual events.

Isaac Amoako said he has gained some valuable experience from competing against good player on the continent.

‘It was a good experience for me. Unlike other competitions where met about ten nations, this one had many nations participating,’ Isaac Amoako said.

‘I have learnt several things in game situations. For instance how to win points, how to control the nerves in crucial moments and what have you.

‘We had some challenges but I we tried our best and qualified for the quarter finals in the singles and team events.
