Assist king: Eric Frimpong leads assists in Nigerian Premier League

Eric Frimpong is not the top scorer at Bayelsa United, but with eight assists this year, the younger brother of former Ghanaian international and Enyimba striker, Joetex Frimpong, is making his mark as the Assist King.

After an unexciting second spell at modest Tunisian side, Club Sportif Hammalif, Frimpong’s representative decided it was time to relaunch his career, in Nigeria.

Ironically, Frimpong struggled to convince Bayelsa United faithful due to inactivity following his exit from Tunisia, but has since become a favourite with his dazzling runs along the flanks like a gazelle and tailor made pull-outs.

Club gaffer, Richard Bubagha, who assisted Ladan Bosso, last season, confirms this development.

“Eric has been more effective this season,” he said to supersport.com.

The Assist King, who is comfortable on both sides of the flanks, has delivered five in the Glo Premier League and three in their short-lived Caf Confederation Cup campaign.

“My job is to operate on both sides of the flanks and create chances for my teammates. I’m happy with the conversion rate which explains why Bayelsa is doing well,” Frimpong told supersport.com.

Statistics
Interestingly, United’s top scorer, Peter Ebimobowei, is the biggest beneficiary of Frimpong’s assists.

Bubagha, an apostle of wing play, has largely deployed Frimpong as a winger.

Frimpong is not just the Assist King, but has scored twice against Nasarawa United and Enyimba, to boost his record this term.

“I’m pleased with his work-rate. Eric’s contributions have been so great to the team,” Bubagha said to supersport.com.

Frimpong’s assists were delivered in home matches against Nasarawa United, Enugu Rangers as well as Abia Warriors and on the road at Sunshine Stars and FC Taraba.

Bayelsa United equally benefited from Frimpong’s assists in the Caf Confederation Cup against FC Kondzo and How Mine.

It will be unfair to compare him with Joetex, who was goal king in Nigeria and Enyimba.

Interestingly, Joetex, started as a winger before switching to the centre forward position.

“My coach at IBB Homers, Tunde Abdulrahman moved me from the wings to centre forward and it worked out well for me. It’s good to know that Eric is doing well and I hope he maintains his form.

“With hard work, Eric will continue to be useful to any team he plays for,” Joetex told supersport.com.

Truth is, with pace, speed and tailor-made crosses, Eric will be out to punish more full-backs this term.

At the end of the season, Eric might not be counted amongst the top scorers, but will create more goals to remain Assist King.
