Mental Hospital Chases Patients

A 50-man team made up of mental health experts from the Accra Psychiatric Hospital and security forces are this morning hitting the streets of Accra to arrest mentally challenged persons found loitering.

The action forms part of the hospital’s mandate of ‘clearing’ Accra’s streets of psychiatric patients.

Per Ghana’s mental health law, 2012, psychiatric hospitals have the power to arrest psychiatric patients from the streets in order to give them proper care.

In recent times, various streets in Ghana’s capital have seen an increasing number of psychiatric patients taking over with many causing public obstruction and nuisance to pedestrians and motorists.

Some of the patients are known to have lived for years without proper care and attention to their health condition.
