Wu Zhikang and Feng Tianwei clinch wins at the ITTF Australia Open

While Singapore’s world number 128 Wu sprung a surprise to see off second seed Zhan Jian, his compatriot Feng was too strong for Japan’s Misaki Morizono.

Wu had seen off home favourite William Henzell in the semi-final in a thrilling seven-game affair but enjoyed a much smoother time of it in the final.

Zhan failed to replicate his comfortable semi-final victory over Asuka Sakai and made a poor start – going three games down early on.

While he rallied to pull one back, it was not enough as Wu secured off a shock win to beat Zhan, ranked 96 places above him, 11-6 11-6 11-9 7-11 11-8.

In the women’s event, Feng clinched her second ITTF tour win of the month in a dominant show against Morizono.

The battle of the top two seeds went as expected – with Feng starting and finishing well to add another success to her victory in the Philippines only last week.

She made it a double success for Singapore with an 11-5 12-10 11-9 11-4 win over world number 37 Morizono.
