The Black Satellites of Ghana on Saturday beat Sierra Leone by 2-1 at the Tamale Stadium to advance to the next stage of the African Youth Championship qualifiers.

The Satellites, who were going into the game as favorites with a 2-0 advantage of their Sierra Leonean counterparts, went behind in the 29th minute when the visitors got the opener through an excellent free kick which beat Ghana goalkeeper Siedu Mutawakilu in post.

The Sierra Leoneans could have rewarded themselves with a second goal 5 minutes later when they capitalized on a defensive blunder by Ghana defender Patrick Asmah, but the tall Mutawakilu stood his grounds to tip the ball away to safety for a corner kick.

Ghana, however got themselves on level terms when 2013 Bronze Ball winner at the under-20 World Cup, Clifford Aboagye took on two defenders before laying a nice pass to winger Thomas Agyepong, who slotted home from close range two minutes from half time.

The 2013 World Cup bronze medalists shot themselves in front within 5 minutes into the second half through Liberty Professionals’ defensive midfielder Latif Abubakar to end the game 2-1 in favor of the Black Satellites.

The win thus means Coach Sellas Tetteh’s men advance to the next round of qualifiers on a 4-1 aggregate score. Ghana will now face either Gabon or Rwanda in the next round.
