Preview: Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid: A local derby set on an European stage


The quest for European glory that has eluded Real Madrid for so long has got its clearest of chances since the club won the last in 2002. This chance however has come at a very high cost. A cost that enormously is valued around £999 million.

The match-day adversary adds a touch of awesomeness to the tie as it is their city neighbours Atletico Madrid who plan to halt their pursuit of a tenth European Cup. And boy would Real have to work for it.

Diego Simeone’s side do not come without their ego-boosting, aggressive minded, eager winning, strength-powering and attack-threating troubles. They conquered it all in Spain, holding the then Champions Barcelona on their own grounds to wrestle the title off them.

They are born Champions, or at least that is what Simeone makes his players feel at the Atletico camp.

Cristiano Ronaldo however would want another UEFA Champions League medal. Nothing can sometimes stand in the way of the World Player of the Year when it comes to occasions like this. And with his sidekick Gareth Bale wanting his first, the stage can never be set higher.

Both managers will be on the touchline with various aspirations and much about their future staked on this particular game. For one it could be a night where he inscribes his name as one of the greatest managers his club has ever had, the other could be an endless summer about what the future holds in terms of the club keeping him as a manager.
