Alex Hales called into England one-day international squad

The 25-year-old batsman starred in Tuesday’s Twenty20 match against the same opponents, hitting 66 off 41 deliveries.

He was not included in Thursday’s first one-day international, though, despite his performance earlier in the week.

But Hales’ time may have come after captain Alastair Cook felt tightness in his groin ahead of Sunday’s clash in Durham.

An England and Wales Cricket Board statement said on Saturday: “Alex Hales has been added to the England ODI squad for the second Royal London One-Day International against Sri Lanka as cover for Alastair Cook who has right groin tightness.

“Cook will be assessed ahead of the game.”
Hales has never represented England in the 50-over format, but has played 32 Twenty20 internationals, averaging 37.85 with the bat.

He made England’s only ever Twenty20 international century against Sri Lanka in the ICC World Twenty20 in March, smashing 116 not out to guide his side to a group stage win.

England lead the five-match one-day series 1-0.
