A strong leader in a weak party can’t win elections – Paul Afoko

National Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko says unity is very necessary in the party’s quest to winning the 2016 general elections.

He indicated that, inasmuch as the flagbearership election is important, it will be extremely difficult for any political party to win an election without unity.

‘No matter how popular or strong a candidate is, he cannot win political power with a divided house’ Mr. Afoko added.

The NPP Chairman was reacting to calls for early presidential primaries ahead of the 2016 elections. Those in favour of the early congress argue that the internal bickering that hitherto has bedeviled the party will be over if a flagbearer is elected early.

But on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday, Paul Afoko said he will not be stampeded to hold flagbearership elections at the expense of the party’s survival in Ghana’s body politic.

He maintained that irrespective of whoever is elected flagbearer, the party will not be able to achieve its objective of wining power if its members are not united.

This notwithstanding, Paul Afoko intends to follow the status quo as stated in the party’s constitution that when the party is in opposition, a flagbearer is elected two years before the next election and we intend to follow that’ he stressed.

He underscored the need for the party to strengthen its foundations by bringing all hands on deck for a formidable front in 2016.

Paul Afoko cautioned aspirants and their supporters to refrain from utterances that will give ammunitions to their political opponents after the contest in December. Story by Ghana/Adomonline.com/Adwoa Gyasiwaa
