Kotoko is the biggest club in Ghana, according to Ghana FA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi.
The two-time African champions have the biggest support base in the country and make the biggest financial contribution in the West African country.
The debate as to which team is the biggest in Ghana has been intense over the years with both Kotoko and their arch-rivals Hearts of Oak laying claim to the accolade.
But according to the Ghanaian football leader, Kotoko stands tall based on the figures at his disposal.
‘I can say that Kotoko is the biggest club in Ghana. I know the Hearts fans won’t be happy hearing me say that,’ he told Peace FM
‘But if you look at the amount of money the side contributes from Premier League matches, it’s 50% and more than what the rest of the 15 teams contribute.’
‘I can only speak about the figures that we get from the FA and conclude that they are the biggest club in Ghana.’
Nyantakyi’s assertion could spark a wave of debate between fans of the two finest clubs in Ghana as both have bragged about being the biggest in the country.
Kotoko is the most decorated club in Ghana having won the African champions League twice and played in several matches on the continent than their rivals Kotoko.
They have also won the domestic League title 23-times, three more than their sworn rivals and boasts of many titles in their trophy cabinet.
Highly recognised and influential football statistics organization based in Germany, International Federation for Football History and Statistics (IFFHS), voted Kotoko African club of the century in 2009, making them most result oriented and attractive ground-breaker in the achievement of international laurels.
Hearts had been in the shadows of the Porcupine Warriors until 2000 when they clinched the Africa’s elite inter-club competition and the Super Cup.
They also won the CAF Confederation Cup at the expense of the Kumasi-based side in 2005.
The capital-based side remain the only team in Ghana to have won the Premier League title in an astonishing six successive seasons.
