After weeks of speculation about who would succeed David Moyes as Manchester United boss, the club have announced that Dutch national team coach Louis van Gaal will take charge after the World Cup, with Ryan Giggs as his assistant.
Van Gaal is expected to oversee a summer of massive spending and rebuilding at Old Trafford in an effort to overcome United’s disappointing 2013/14 season, with Southampton’s Luke Shaw high on his target list.
The 62-year-old Dutchman, who is currently overseeing the Netherlands’ World Cup preparations, has been given a three year contract at Old Trafford.
Van Gaal comes into the job with bags of top class experience, having won titles with Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, but this is his first job in England.
United sacked David Moyes in April only 10 months after he succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson, who was in charge for 26 years before retiring last summer.
Van Gaal’s new assistant coach, Ryan Giggs took over for the last four games of the season and met van Gaal in the Netherlands last week to discuss his future; talks which evidently went well.
The Netherlands coach may make Robin van Persie Manchester United captain, as he installed him as Netherlands skipper in June 2013.
