The 1998 UGMS year group handing over the cheque to Priscilla’s parents and the Head of the National Cardiothoracic Centre, Dr Lawrence Agyeman Sereboe
The University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS) 1998 year group has presented an amount of GH¢5000 to a hole in heart patient, Priscilla Madjitey.
Two years, nine-months- old Priscilla is suffering from a congenial rubella syndrome which has rendered her blind in both eyes from cataract in addition to her heart condition.
She needs the hole in heart surgery so that she could have a cataract surgery for her to regain her sight.
Dr Andrews Kwabena-Adade, Consultant, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care and former President of the University Of Ghana Medical Students Association, presenting the cheque said the plight of the girl was drawn to the attention of the year group through a member who works at the National Cardiothoracic Centre, ‘so we decided to contribute to help her undergo the surgery, so we asked for the cost and we all came together to mobilise the resources,’ Dr Kwabena-Adade said.
He said because of the condition of the girl, the parents are unable to foot the bill for her treatment, ‘and if we leave her we know the inevitable will happen.
‘We considered her situation as a very urgent one and we came here to help her. The group is taking one issue at a time and is prepared to help little Priscilla get well,’ he added.
The father of the girl, Alex Madjitey, also said they have been to the hospital for the past two years, first for treatment for the eye but was directed to the cardiothoracic centre for further test on her heart.
He said it was then that they discovered Priscilla had a hole in heart and needed a surgery to survive.
‘We are very grateful for what they have done because we did not expect any help from anywhere,’ he said.
