Stanbic Bank is the latest corporate body to lend a hand in Ghana’s preparation for the Brazil 2014 World Cup and the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The bank, with a huge presence on the continent, presented two cheques – a ¢100,000 for the Summer World Cup and ¢30,000 for the Commonwealth Games in Scotland – to the Youth and Sports Minister Hon Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah at his office in Accra.

Head of marketing at Stanbic Bank, Mawuko Afadzinu, in the company of the bank’s top management members before the presentation, said, ‘We are here to lend a hand. We want to see Brazil as a kind of a watershed for the Black Stars. Today’s presentation affirms our support for sports development.’

Youth and Sports Minister Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah highly commended Stanbic for the support saying, ‘If you ask any sports person one of the things that demoralizes on the field of play, they will tell you competing without spectators.

‘I commend you highly for this gesture; you have really surprised me with the cheque for the Commonwealth Games. We will put the money to good use and account for every penny as I keep saying.

‘This will help us in our quest to send as many supporters as possible to Brazil. Brazil is expensive and government can’t use the consolidated fund to send fans for the World Cup. This will certainly help us,’ he stated.
