Drama unfolded at Abura Dunkwa in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese (AAK) District of the Central Region on Friday when five heavily-built men known in the local parlance as ‘machomen,’ brutally assaulted the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Chairman, Christopher Akutsu, tearing his trousers and shirt into shreds.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that the constituency chairman was left wearing only his boxer’s shorts as he tried to cover himself with the torn clothes in an effort to cover his nakedness.
Mr. Akutsu, who was said to be half naked and confused, had no other option than to run into his vehicle and drive to his house. He was at the District Assembly premises around 4pm when the incident happened.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that the incident took place in the presence of the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area, Atta Mends.
The DCE was said not to be in good terms with the chairman and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area as well as most of the constituency executives of the NDC.
Information indicated that the ‘machomen’ were sent by a top NDC man (name withheld for now) to go and deal with an assembly member who had moved a motion of no confidence against the DCE.
This paper gathered at the assembly that the DCE, who was at the meeting when the assemblyman moved for his removal on Thursday, allegedly called the assembly man via telephone to threaten him that he would teach him a lesson the following day.
Briefing DAILY GUIDE, a source stated that the men arrived at the assembly premises at about 8:00 am to wait for the assemblymen; and upon realizing that he was not showing up, saw the chairman whom the DCE had accused of instigating the assemblyman to cause his removal. They allegedly pounced on him and beat him without telling him his offence.
DAILY GUIDE had gathered that the chairman, who had a swollen face and some bruises on the body, reported the matter to the Abura Dunkwa police where he was issued with a police medical form to seek treatment at the Abura Dunkwa Government Hospital.
Meanwhile, irate supporters of the party over the weekend organised a press conference to appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to sack the DCE or they would quit the party.
When contacted, Mr. Akutsu confirmed the incident and further expressed concern about the way hooligans had been going round bragging that no police officer could arrest them.
All efforts to speak to Mr. Mends proved futile as he refused to pick calls from this reporter.
