Yohunu On Unannounced Inspections

The Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has charged police officers to desist from begging for money in the course of performing their duties.

This, he said, undermines the credibility of the profession of policing.

DCOP Yohunu made the statements when he undertook unannounced inspection of check points within the Accra metropolis last Friday, to among others, raise the morale of personnel at those locations.

‘Some of our men while on patrol duties rather go on begging sprees instead of concentrating on the job, thus, leaving criminals to go unnoticed,’ he said.

He urged the men on patrol duties to be vigilant and look out for criminals who would want to attack innocent victims at night.

‘Let us all join hands to make Accra crime-free area so that the people we serve can also be  free to go about their duties,’ he said.

Areas visited
The Regional Commander and his entourage visited the Kpeshie Divisional Police Command, the Nima Divisional Police Command, the Madina Divisional Command and the Kaneshie Divisional Command.

At the Ridge snap check point, he was told that the Ministries District Commander told him that his men were on the lookout for fake number plates and tampered numbers among other assignments.

The team continued to Cantonments where Chief Superintendent Idi Seidu and his men were spotted busily undertaking their duties.

The Cantonments District Police Commander told the Regional Commander that the police were there to monitor the movement of people in the area, adding that the areas are always under 24 hour surveillance to reduce crime.

The team then proceeded to Osu where the District Commander, Superintendent K. A. Arhin explained that tourists were normally attacked at the Oxford Street area, but since the police mounted a snap check point at the area, crime had reduced.

At Legon, the District Police Commander who was also at post together with the Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Nuhu Jango, took the Regional Commander to all the seven snap check points within the division.

He said the East Legon foot bridge area had recorded a lot of bag snatching and petty stealing incidences, but ever since the snap check point was mounted, this had reduced.

The team then proceeded to Madina and Adenta to inspect more than nine snap check points mounted within the crime prone areas.

The Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent M. A Yakubu and his two subordinates, DSP Stephen Ahiatafu and Superintendent Victoria Yamoah said several of the suspected criminals arrested within their division were arrested through the snap check points.

Some of them, he was told, escaped into some nearby bushes after attacking their victims.

At Pantang East, the Divisional Commander explained that ‘some of the residents requested for the snap check points in some areas they feel they are normally attacked.’

He said residents have been supportive in helping to fight crime.

At Odorkor, the District Commander, Superintendent Abraham Acquaye told the Regional Commander that several criminals including car snatchers were normally arrested during their operations.
