Lions beat Medeama to boost chances of Champions League

Heart of Lions beat Medeama 1-0 boost their chances of a second-place finish in the Premier League and qualification for Africa’s Champions League.

The win on Sunday in Kpando leaves Lions in second place and extended their advantage over third-place Hearts of Oak to three points as they chase a first-ever appearance in continental football.

A stoppage time winner by Prince Acquah made the difference as Lions will now head into the final weeks of the competition ahead of their rivals.

Seven points separate Lions and leaders, Asante Kotoko with three games remaining, and this win could prove crucial to Yusif Abubakar’s sides mathematical hope of even finishing top in the event of a major slip by the Reds.

Medeama, who were close to salvaging a point were undone when Acquah in the 89th minute struck the winner to send the Kpando Park into wild celebrations after a goalless opening half.

The result will represent a poor return for Medeama, who could only pick three points from a possible 12 points in four outstanding matches as they remain 8th on the log and just two points above the relegation zone.
