Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT) has launched a five-year strategic plan as part of efforts to sustain its operations.

The company has also inaugurated an Information Communication Technology (ICT) based fuel monitoring and vehicle tracking system to reduce fuel leakage and ensure the safety of its passengers and staff nationwide.

Speaking at the launch of the strategic plan and the commissioning of the ICT Based Fuel and Vehicle Tracking Systems in Accra on Wednesday, Osabarima Ansah Sasraku III, Board Chairman of Metro Mass Transit Limited, said the measures put in place by the company were targeted at transforming MMT to focus on improving the safety of passengers and staff, enhancing customer service and increasing the revenue base of the company, among others.

According to him, the Government of Ghana and MMT were building an efficient transport system.

Commenting on the social packages provided by MMT to the public, the Board Chairman indicated that the company had planned to extend the free bus ride programme offered to school children and persons with disability across the country.

Managing Director (MD) of MMT, John Noble Appiah, in a presentation, said his outfit has over the years suffered from poor customer service and ageing fleet that nearly led to the collapse of the company in 2007, adding that ‘it is for this reason that we are coming out with this strategic plan to improve upon our services’.

According to him, the company had changed its vision and intend to become a world-class mass transport company within the West African sub-region.

He said MMT would import 1,000 buses from China over the next five year to increase the number of buses.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Transport, Dzifa Attivor, in a speech, noted that the fuel and fleet control management system would help reduce the rate of siphoning of fuel from MMT’s vehicles and would also help to reduce the company’s cost in terms of fuel usage.

Ms. Attivor charged management of MMT to ensure that the company provides transportation for Ghanaians in the hinterlands across the country.

She indicated that MMT’s new mission is to provide reliable, safe and efficient mass transport services in Ghana.

MMT was established under public-private partnership in 2002 during the previous Kufour administration and was incorporated in 2003.

The Government of Ghana holds 45 percent shares in MMT with institutions such as Agricultural Development Bank (adb), Prudential Bank and the National Investment Bank (NIB) holding 55 percent shares.

The company currently operates about 1,019 buses on about 324 routes nationwide.
