One person has been confirmed dead in another land dispute between Beriba and Yiyamba – two separate Konkomba farming communities in the Gushiegu District of the Northern Region.

District Chief Executive (DCE) and Chairman of the District Security Committee (DISEC), Alhaji Alhassan Fusheini, who confirmed the skirmishes in the area to DAILY GUIDE, disclosed that the deceased, aged 35 years, was shot in the heat of gunfire exchanges by the two communities.

More than 30 houses, he disclosed, had been completely razed down, compelling residents to flee the troubled communities for safety, indicating as at press time yesterday that a combined team of armed police and military personnel were on their way to the town.

According to the Gushiegu District Police Commander, ASP Steven Paa Yeboah, the incident first happened late last Sunday but escalated on Monday before security personnel could contain the situation.

He said the people of Beriba accused the people of Yerimba of occupying their land without authority and suspected they (people of Yerimba) were intending to claim it, but the Beribas also indicated that the land did not belong to the Yerimbas.

This was said to have heightened tension in the two communities, degenerating into the sporadic gun battle which resulted in one death and a few injuries.
