WEIGHT LIFTERS in the country have to protect themselves adequately when they go to the gym, in order to avert developing hernia, a renowned medical doctor has admonished.

Dr Kwame Antwi of County Clinic in Kumasi added, ‘People who lift heavy metals stand the risk of stretching their muscles and developing hernia in the process, hence the need for them to protect themselves.’

He proposed that weight lifters could protect themselves by putting on tight belts just under their belly whilst ‘you lift metals so that your muscles will not be stretched unduly and result in hernia.’

Dr Antwi was addressing a large gathering when Metro FM collaborated with the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Kwadaso branch, to organise a health programme dubbed ‘Wapomu Tesen.’

The famous health programme, which is aired on Metro FM with Evelyn Nsiah Asare as its host, was taken out of Metro FM’s studios to the Presbyterian Church during the Mothers’ Day celebration to enable the public to experience it.

The event was graced by seasoned medical doctors in Kumasi who came in to educate the huge gathering about several diseases and what they could do to stay healthy all the time.

Dr Ahmed Kwaku Owusu, of Akobalm Phytotherapeutic Clinic urged the populace to exercise regularly and check their diet so that they would stay healthy and avert falling sick.

Evelyn Nsiah Asare of Metro FM said the event formed part of her station’s corporate social responsibilities, adding that Kofi Gyimah Enterprise presented washing powder and medisoft washing soap, among others, to people who attended the programme.

Participants at the programme were also screened free of charge in diseases such as diabetes, Hepatitis B and many others.

Those detected suffering from ailments were referred to hospital for further treatment.
