The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, has announced programmes for the commemoration of the World Day Against Child Labour with a call on social partners to join the fight.
The day, celebrated on June 12 each year, is part of the global advocacy arrangement to highlight the plight of children caught up in labour and to serve as a catalyst for the growing worldwide movement against the trend.
This year’s celebration is on the theme, ‘Combating Child Labour In Ghana Through Effective Social Protection.’
A release singed by the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Nii Armarh Ashitey, said the theme is to draw attention to the role of social protection in keeping children out of child labour.
He said the social partners could assist the government in integrating child labour concerns into the design, implementation and monitoring of national policies and ensure that they address child labour more effectively and efficiently.
‘Through collective bargaining, trade unions and employers can ensure that supplementary social security schemes provide adequate and affordable protection for members and their families, supporting family income security as essential bulwark against the risk of child labour,’ he stated.
The Minister underscored, ‘The primary responsibility for formulating national social protection strategies and expanding the delivery of national social security systems to cover as many people as possible rests with government, but workers’ and employers’ organizations also have key roles to play.’
Activities lined up for the celebration include a media launch on Thursday, 5 June, 2014, followed by sensitization activities and media discussions. A day for the children will be organized as well as a national policy forum on social protection and child labour.
