Inmates of leprosariums to receive LEAP payments

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection has said the government would extend the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme to all lepers in leprosariums across the country.

“You will be enrolled on the LEAP so that anytime disbursements are made you would get some resources,” she told inmates at the Weija Leprosarium.

She has also given the assurance that all lepers in the country would soon be registered on the biometric platform of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Nana Oye said these when she paid a working visit to the Weija Leprosarium in Accra.

  Biometric registration
The minister, who freely interacted with the lepers, also indicated that she would pay similar visits to other leprosariums across the country.

According to Nana Oye, the Ministry will soon embark on an exercise to register people who are above 65 years under the NHIS biometric registration.

She commended all philanthropists, individuals and organisations who have contributed towards the development of the leprosarium.

  Appeal for support
The Chairman of the Leper Aid Committee, Reverend Father Andrew Campbell, thanked the minister and her delegation for their support to the orphanage.

He called on all benevolent organisations to support the activities of the leprosarium, but bemoaned the negative attitude of people towards lepers.
