Experts to monitor outcomes of Economic Forum

A group of experts is to be constituted to monitor the progress of the outcomes of the National Economic Forum, the Vice-President, Mr Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, has said.

Speaking at the opening of the four-day forum in Akosombo Tuesday, he said the group would develop post-action plans to effectively monitor the implementation of the outcomes.

The forum is being attended by representatives of political parties, civil society groups, business people, economists, workers’ representatives and other interest groups.

The main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has boycotted it.

The main objective of the forum is to promote dialogue towards achieving consensus on the policies, strategies and measures that are required to accelerate the transition to a higher and sustainable path of development and improve the quality of life of all Ghanaians.

It will also explore the possibility of institutionalising a regular consultative machinery to promote dialogue between the public sector and the social partners in order to develop a national consensus on some of the critical economic policy issues confronting the country. Managing the economy

Mr Amissah-Arthur said although the management of the economy was the responsibility of the government, it would ensure that the consensus arrived at the forum would be given due consideration.

In that vein, he asked participants to openly come out with ideas that could transform the economy.

He said the forum was being organised with an open mind devoid of any political colourisation.

“We decided not to impose government on the forum,“ he said, adding that the selection of participants was done with a balance. Transformation of economy

The Vice-President stressed the need for all hands to be on deck to find a path to medium-to-long-term economic development.

The economy, he said, must be built by Ghanaians and not any external force.

That was why the government was ready to build a national consensus on the way forward, he said.

He commended all who responded positively to the invitation to the forum and expressed the hope that their views would enrich efforts at advancing national economic growth.
