ECOWAS to tap Morocco’s expertise in construction

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is to consider tapping the expertise of Morocco in the execution of some projects on the table of the sub-regional body, the President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, has said.

Mr Mahama, who is also the Chairman of the Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, mentioned some of the projects as highways, energy, expansion of ports, railways and aviation.

The President stated this when the Morrocan Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Salaheddine Nezouar, paid a courtesy call on him at the Flagstaff House in Accra yesterday.

Mr Mahama said Morocco had made strides in construction and engineering, adding that, ” I know that ECOWAS can count on their experience.”

He said a number of Moroccan delegations had visited many West African countries to look at developing social housing and expressed the hope that the relationships would grow.

  Ghana-Morocco relations
Ghana and Morocco, the President said, had long historical relations dating back to the period of President Kwame Nkrumah.

He said the relations could be promoted to an even higher level looking at the expertise the two nations had.

President Mahama said Ghanaian students had benefited from higher education in Morocco and were working in various sectors of the economy back home.

Mr Nezouar said Morocco was impressed with the efforts of the Ghanaian authorities to develop the human capital of the country.

He said Africa should look within itself to develop. “Africa should be for Africans,” he said.

The minister said there should be concerted efforts to tackle the adventures of Islamic extremists who continued to pose a threat to lives and property.

On behalf of his country’s leadership, Mr Salaheddine Nezouar congratulated President Mahama on his election as ECOWAS Chairman.
