Revenue Collectors Told To Be Polite With Tax Payers

The Suame Deputy Commissioner of Medium Taxpayer Office (MTO) of the Ghana Revenue Authority Mr. Kontoh Adampah has appealed to local revenue collectors to as means of building a robust tax base should be cautious to taxpayers.

He said, tax is essential to nation building but unfortunately most potential tax payers are not well educated on the need to pay tax which he believes are making people feel reluctant to willingly and faithfully pay their taxes.

The commissioner continued that, people expect to see the taxes they pay used to tar roads, build their markets, clinics, provide good drinking water, and other immediate social interventions therefore it is the duty of the revenue collectors who are supposed to be enlightened to explain to these tax payers the collective national benefits of the tax they pay.

He tutored that local tax and revenue collectors should always retreat to opposing clients, MMDA’s should also provide income and wealth generating activities in the districts, provide packages for taxpayers to increase and widen the tax base in the district.

He was speaking at a two-day workshop on the theme ‘Local Empowerment, Accountability and Resource Mobilization(LEARN) project jointly organized by Christian Aid(CA), Institute for Democratic Governance, and Ghana Integrity Initiative with funding support from the European Union (EU).

The project seeks to support citizens across 18 districts to increase their influence over local government policy, particularly around taxation, unemployment and accountability. The project targets various Districts Chiefs Executives, Planning and Budget officers, local Tax Officers, traditional leaders, members of the various MMDAs as well as CBO for successful implementation.
