THE SWIFT intervention of armed policemen numbering over 50 helped to prevent a free-for-all brawl between muscularly-built supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the Kumasi Airport, last Saturday.
Angry supporters of the two leading political parties were virtually at each other’s throat, trading hefty punches at each other at the Kumasi Airport Roundabout, on Saturday around 4:30pm.
Supporters of the NDC and NPP were heading to the Kumasi Airport to welcome President Mahama and Rebecca Akufo-Addo, respectively, who were heading to Kumasi to attend the Asantehene’s grand durbar on Sunday.
The teeming supporters of the two political parties clashed dangerously at the Airport Roundabout and this instantly generated into a dangerous fight right in the middle of the road, causing massive vehicular traffic.
Within minutes armed policemen rushed to the scene and managed to separate the two feuding parties who were bent on spilling blood and causing massive destruction.
Nana Ama Ampomah, the Ashanti Regional Women’s Organizer of the NPP who was present at the scene, was seen marching her party’s supporters to a safer place around the roundabout.

Some policemen that rushed to the Airport Roundabout to ensure peace
Speaking with DAILY GUIDE she said the NPP members in Kumasi were heading to the Kumasi Airport to welcome the wife of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, when they were stopped by the NDC macho men.
According to her, the NDC macho men said they had information that the NPP supporters were storming the airport in large numbers ostensibly to hoot at President Mahama, who was also visiting Kumasi.
She said the NPP supporters explained that they were going to the airport just to accord a rousing welcome to Nana Akufo-Addo’s wife, but the angry supporters refused to accept their explanation.
Nana Ama Ampomah noted that serious verbal assault ensued between the NPP and NDC supporters present and this nearly generated into a free-for-all brawl right in the street when the police intervened.
The NPP organizer said the police then admonished the NPP supporters to stand at a certain portion of the roundabout whilst the NDC fans also stood at a different location to ensure peace.
Later on, the convoy of Nana Akufo-Addo’s wife was seen from the Kumasi Airport to Georgia Hotel after which President Mahama’s convoy also appeared, heading to an unknown location in the city.
