Accra, May 13, GNA – Former President Jerry John Rawlings has appealed to the Nigerian Islamist group ‘Boko Haram’ to release the over 200 school girls kidnapped by its members about three weeks ago.

‘I am in the name of Allah pleading for the return of the girls back to their families’, said the former President in a press release copied to the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday.

Former President Rawlings said Boko Haram had made its point, but added that it was unacceptable for the group to continue to do so at the expense of the lives of innocent men, women and children.

He also pointed out that the ease with which various local activists perpetrated acts of piracy and kidnapping on the oil coast of Nigeria was ‘the first sign of our vulnerability.’

Former President Rawlings said while welcoming international intervention in the effort to resolve the current situation, ‘it is equally important to look into the root causes that give rise to these developments.’
