K’si Choked

VEHICULAR MOVEMENT in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital, was restricted on Friday morning and experts believe the trend would continue throughout the weekend.

There was an unusual traffic all over the city, especially Adum, the Central Business District (CBD), on Friday morning and this odd happening affected all activities in the city.

A sizeable number of people, all over the country and abroad, have trooped to Kumasi to take part in a grand durbar to commemorate the

15-year reign of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Scores of people that talked to DAILY GUIDE attributed the massive vehicular traffic in the city to the influx of people in the city to attend the historic event taking place at Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.

When the paper visited the town Friday morning around 8:00am, the streets were choked, as commercial and private vehicles could not move freely.

Reports monitored by the paper indicated that the massive vehicular traffic also occurred at the Kejetia Bus Terminal area and the roads leading to the Kumasi Central Market.

Shops in the city, notably Adum, which is the heart of Kumasi, were opened late as shop owners who were stuck in traffic could not reach their shops on time to transact business.

The massive vehicular traffic was also witnessed in parts of Kumasi such as Bantama, Stadium, Akwatia Line, Airport Roundabout, Buokrom and Suame Roundabout.

Some of the people who spoke to the paper expressed frustration over the massive traffic. They said they could not even remember when roads in Kumasi got as choked as they did on Friday.

They said the number of people living in the city had increased, adding that they had seen foreigners all over the place.

They added that they have also seen different flashy cars plying the streets of Kumasi.

The people suspected that the grand durbar to commemorate the Asantehene’s 15 years on the Golden Stool was the cause of the massive traffic in the city, lamenting that they were struggling to move freely in the city as they usually do.
