French-born Ghanaian defender Dennis Appiah helped FC Caen to secure promotion to the French Ligue 1 despite losing 3-1 to Tours on the final day of the Ligue 2 season.

Caen booked their return to the French elite division last weekend after their narrow 1-0 victory at Brest and the outcome of Friday night’s defeat  at the Stade Michel d’Ornano could not alter their fate.

Appiah, an on-loan versatile defender from giants AS Monaco was in full time action on the night, making his 33rd and final appearance in the club’s colours.

The 21-year-old whose orthodox place is at right-back and can also slot in at central defence, will return to Monaco as the season Ligue 2 season has officially ended.

But Caen manager Patrice Garande is interested in retaining the young defender and would ask Monaco to allow him on another season-long loan spell.

Appiah is the second French-born Ghanaian defender to have played for Caen in two season after Jerry Vandam played for them last season after joining them from Lille.
