Information gathered by DAILY GUIDE indicates that a helicopter of an oil-related venture crashed into the sea around the West Cape Three Points in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region yesterday afternoon.
The accident happened 20 nautical miles off the coast of Takoradi on Thursday afternoon.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that the four deceased persons were workers of Luk Oil; but their identities were yet to be made public as at press time yesterday.
Among the dead are the two pilots of the chopper that had taken off from the Takoradi Airport at 12:57pm on a 15-minute flight to a new oil rig, Jack Ryan, belonging to Luk Oil for appraisal and completion of wells duties and also to change crew offshore when the accident occurred.
A source said the helicopter which is owned by International Aircraft Service and operated by Volta River Aviation was contracted by Luk Oil.
Reports also said the workers were going to work on their rig when the accident occurred.
The helicopter was expected at its destination at about 1:10pm. However, two hours passed without any sign of it.
Meanwhile, a source at the National Security has indicated that only one person died in the crash.
According to the source, eight persons were onboard the helicopter when the incident happened and that five were rescued while two were still missing.
It was not clear what caused the crash but sources at the place attributed it to poor visibility.
When DAILY GUIDE contacted Capt. Linda Oboh, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Armed Forces in the Western Region, she indicated that even though she had also heard of the crash, the details she was receiving were sketchy.
She indicated that she was in touch with some personnel off-shore and promised to get back to the paper when she was furnished with the full details about the crash.
