SOME CHIEFS and youth in the Ningo Traditional Area have vented their spleen on the Acting President of the Area, Nene Kanor Atiapa III, accusing him of dipping his hands into revenues meant for development while the indigenes live in abject poverty.
They want the Acting President, who doubles as the Mankralo of the Area, to openly render account for the levies collected which according to the angry chiefs and the youth, he had failed to pay into the coffers of the Ningo-Prampram District Assembly.
The Assembly is among the six in the Greater Accra Region created in 2012. It was carved out of the then Dangme West District.
Since the creation of the assembly, a group calling itself the Great Ningo Youth Association has never felt happy about the choice of Prampram as the district capital.
The impasse has since escalated with the youth allegedly vandalizing District Assembly offices in Ningo, attacking the staff and collecting revenue due the assembly for the Ningo Traditional Council.
Nene Odoi III, Asafoatse of the Traditional Area who was the chairman of a press conference held at Old Ningo, noted that the unlawful acts of some of the youth had created a lot of anxiety among the citizens, saying that could scare away investors.
Earlier, Mr. Samuel Korley, Assembly Member for the Kungortsitsa Electoral Area, addressing the news conference, disclosed that all the efforts by the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Mr. Enoch Teye Mensah, to broker peace had proved futile.
Nene Kanor Atiapa III, responding to the allegation leveled against him, denied having any link with the revenue collection in the Ningo Traditional Area, and pointed out that the Traditional Council set up a committee to take charge of the levies collected.
He retorted, ‘We voted for the Assembly Members in Ningo and what have they offered us that they want accountability?’
Nene Atiapa stressed that he would not allow his people to vote in the forthcoming assembly election because according to him, once people are given the mandate they turn their backs against the electorate.
