Former Hearts star Ishmael Addo still haunted by May 9 disaster

Ex- Hearts of Oak star Ishmael Addo he still loses sleep over how his two goals played apart in the Accra Sports Stadium tragedy 13 years ago.

Then in his prime, the dreaded striker scored the pair of goals which gave Hearts a 2-1 win but the Kotoko fans were questioned the eligibility of the second goal.

They responded by throwing missiles and seats on to the pitch and the police fired tear gas into the crowd.

This led to a stampede at the stand as the fans tried to file away.

“May 9th will always be part of me and up until today I still see the images in my head whenever I try to close my eyes,” Addo told GHANASoccernet.com.

“It was a stadium packed with spectators from both sides of Ghana’s most traditional teams and we the players felt privileged to be playing for our various clubs, at least I felt privileged to be playing for Hearts as at then.

“I can’t remember clearly the build up to the goals but I remember Kotoko took the lead and I got Hearts back on track, shortly after that I put Hearts in front after receiving a pass from Don Bortey.

“At that point we were all in jubilant mood no one saw what was coming and the pain and memories have been with me since then.”
