EC Sets June 20 For Limited Registration

The Electoral Commission (EC) is embarking on a revision of the voters register from Friday, June 20 to Sunday, June 29, 2014.

The revision is a limited voter registration intended to offer Ghanaians who have attained the voting age of 18 years since the last registration in 2012 and those who were above 18 years but could not, for various reasons, register as voters in 2012 the opportunity to register now.

According to Mr Amadu Sulley, Deputy Chairman (Operations) of the EC, the registration will take place at designated registration centres in all electoral areas throughout the country.

In a statement he said the selected centres would be published in the national newspapers before the commencement of the registration, and advised prospective applicants to check the newspapers for the registration centres in their electoral areas.

Mr Sulley reminded all applicants that they would be required to show proof of eligibility by tendering any identification documents such as Ghanaian passport, national identification card, a driving licence, National Health Insurance card or the old voter ID card (in the case of persons who were registered voters before the replacement of the voters register in 2012).

According to him, applicants who do not have any of the identification documents will be required to find two people who are already registered as voters to complete documents to guarantee their registration.

He cautioned the general public that it was an offence punishable by a fine or imprisonment or both to register or attempt to register a second time. Any double registration will be detected through the matching of fingerprints in the database.

The registration will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day of the registration period, including Saturdays and Sundays.
