The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, yesterday honoured 100 hard-working teachers from deprived communities across the country, as part of activities marking the 15 th  anniversary of his enstoolment as the Overlord of the Asante Kingdom.

Ten teachers were selected from each of the 10 regions. Among the awardees were Ernest Opoku of Subenso-Kwabenaso D/A Primary School in the Amansie West District; Gideon Apia Boakye of Nyameadom D/A Primary School; 57-year-old Georgina Osei of Teacherkrom T.I. Ahmadiyya Primary School; 58-year-old Juliana Adjei of Adumasa All Saints JHS in the Atwima Kwanwoma District.

They were each presented with a refrigerator and assorted items, including a solar lamp with a charger, insecticide treated mosquito net, a pair of Wellington boots, a cutlass and a certificate.

The award winners were selected based on their performance and commitment to the promotion of quality education in the areas where they teach.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu underpinned the need for greater recognition of the contribution of teachers in the nation’s developmental effort, particularly those in the rural communities.

According to the Asantehene, the progress of the country depends on quality human resource and skills, and that these could not be achieved without the teacher.

‘Teachers need to be rewarded for the good job they are doing in helping to develop the human capital of the nation,’ Otumfuo underscored, and added that it was for this reason that he had taken it upon himself to honour those who accept to teach in remote and deprived communities.

Mrs. Gifty Bangdong, a 30-year-old teacher of Samatigu R/C Junior High School in the Nadowli District of the Upper West Region, on behalf of her colleagues, thanked the Asantehene for the honour done them.

She said they were happy about the recognition and promised to continue to work hard to improve the standard of education in the country.

The award ceremony, which is an annual event instituted by the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Charity Foundation, is the fourth in a series since he ascended the Golden Stool 15 years ago.
