Three persons are helping the Odorkor Police in their investigations into the death of a 34-year-old fisherman believed to have been killed while he was on a fishing expedition on the River Densu.
The three — Eric Segafa, 23, a mason and fisherman; Daniel Segafa, 23, and Stephen Ahiako, 26, both fishermen — are suspected to have attacked Lumor Abbetey in a fishing community at Agape Down in Accra.
Abbetey, who lived at Joma Adakopey, is said to have gone fishing with his son about 7 a.m. on Monday, May 5, 2014, when the alleged killers pounced on him and beat him to death on the River Densu.
The suspects, according to the Odorkor Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Mr Abraham Acquaye, are currently in police custody.
He said the incident was reported to the Anyah Police, who went to the crime scene and with the support of the Chief of Joma, a search party was organised to look for the body.
Mr Acquaye told the Daily Graphic that the body was retrieved from the river, and it bore assault marks on the left shoulder and the face.
The body has since been deposited in the morgue of the Police Hospital in Accra, pending autopsy. Aunt speaks
According to an aunt of the deceased, Ms Joyce Akpola, the 13-year-old son of the deceased rushed home about 10 a.m. on Monday, May 5, 2014, with the news that some men had attacked his father and hit his head with a bamboo stick while they were fishing in the river.
“I quickly rushed to the river bank with my grandson but the attackers had absconded,” the 54-year-old woman said. Son hides
The young boy, according to Ms Akpola, had been pushed into the river and asked to swim to the other side by the attackers or they would kill him.
She said the boy had said his father, who could not understand what was happening, looked terrified as he was ordered to come out of the canoe.
The boy told his father’s aunt that he had swum across the river and hidden in a bush close by, with the intention of waiting for the people to leave so he could join his father.
“But he said he suddenly saw the people beating his father mercilessly and when the father’s head was hit with a stick, he fell, while the attackers continued to beat him,” she narrated.
