Nigeria Gets Civil War Era Nasal Vessel From USA

The United States navy yesterday gave her Nigerian counterpart her Coast Guard Cutter Gallatin.

The Nigerian navy officially christened the warship with the name, NNS Okpabana (Thunder), the ceremony occurred at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in North Charleston, United States and had United States coast guardsmen and visitors there to see the U.S. flag was lowered and replaced by that of Nigeria.

Coast Guard Rear Admiral Bruce Baffer praised the strenght of the Gallatin, saying it helped their navy fight the war against international trade of narcotics, rescue missions and disaster relief.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro was on hand to represent the country and thanked the U.S coast guard for their support to the nation over the years.

He said:”I am glad to know that American support has greatly enhanced the capacity of the Nigerian navy,”.

The ceremony came to an end as Officials of the Nigerian navy entered onto the vessel, to take full command of her.

The Coast Guard Cutter Gallatin, was built in a Louisiana shipyard and was commissioned in 1969.
