Former military head of state, Major General (rtd.) Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the Chibok girls’ abduction carried out by the Boko Haram terrorist sect and called upon the FG and the Army Forces to put more more efforts in finding the girls.

In his essay, dated May 8, he says he was horrified by the recent video allegedly posted by Boko Haram where the leader of the group Abubakar Shekau boasts having kidnapped and holding the Borno State girls in captivity. However, Buhari said, men like them should not be allowed to threaten or violate Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Buhari condemns the girls’ abduction. He describes Boko Haram as a mindless, anarchist group of “misguided bigots masquerading as adherents of Islam,” who “are not followers of God [and…] do not mean well for our country and her citizens.”

Such “unrestrained disregard for the sanctity of human life,” Buhari says, can not be justified and has no place neither in the Holy Quran, nor in the Holy Bible. Being a Muslim, he says, he is familiar with the teaching of Christianity and therefore knows that both religions arevying for peace.

He notes that the whole “civilized” world has united against this latest act of atrocity by Boko Haram, and expresses gratitude to the worldwide support from the international community. However, he notes that the Federal Government and the Armed Forces could still do more to ensure the safety of Nigerians.

Buhari then says he fought for a united Nigeria, and, in his “old” age, would like the young people of Nigeria and all Nigeriand to live in and benefit from “a prosperous and united country” devoid of any sectarian violence.

Buhari stresses that this is not the right time to play politics, trade blames or emphasize ideological differences. He urges every Nigerian, either in the country on an expatriate, to support the country, and expresses hopes that the young ladies will be reunited with their respective families as soon as possible.
