Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams, believes that many officials of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) are either wee smokers or cocaine users.
This, he said, was because ‘they talk as if they were on drugs.’
‘They smoke ‘wee’ and sniff cocaine at their headquarters. They distribute ‘wee’ and cocaine to them…The fact that they smoke wee and sniff cocaine does not mean they should talk by heart. I am telling you that what they are saying; it is only someone who has taken weed or someone who has sniffed cocaine who will speak that way,’ he charged at a television host who had enquired about the allegation he had made.
Kofi Adams, who is the spokesman for Jerry John Rawlings, founder of the ruling NDC, made the comments on ‘Asem yi di ka’, a late afternoon show on Accra-based Amansan Television (ATV), leaving his host, Nana Yaw Fianko, completely startled.
At that time, they were discussing the speech delivered by the President to workers on May Day. This was in the presence of another member of the NDC communications team, Bernard Anim-Piesie.
Issue
A member of the panel, David Prah, who happens to be the Eastern Regional Director of Communication for the NPP, indicated that the NDC had given Rlg (an ICT company) tablets to 500 of its (NDC) communicators at a meeting held in the Central Regional capital of Cape Coast recently, which was chaired by Kofi Adams.
In addition to that, Prah said it was on social media that each of the members of the party’s communication team who attended the meeting was given an amount of GH¢200.
Big wigs said to be at the meeting were Energy Minister, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah; Mfantseman MP, Aquinas Tawiah Quansah; former Central Regional Minister, Ama Benyiwa Doe; Central Regional Propaganda Secretary of the NDC, Allotey Jacobs and a host of others.
Even though Mr. Adams did not deny attending or chairing the said meeting, he took offence in the allegation when he was reached on phone for comment.
Instead of responding to the substantive issue, he decided to charge on the leadership of the NPP.
Anger
When the question was levelled at him as to whether the NDC had held a meeting during which such freebies were doled out, Kofi Adams charged, ‘If the NPP people go and sit at their headquarters and they are given wee and cocaine, they should speak sense when they come on air.’
Not even an attempt by the host to calm him down would suffice since he was bent on driving home his point saying, ‘but it is wee and cocaine they smoke at the headquarters; wee and cocaine is what is given to them there.’
He continued: ‘When they are given the wee and cocaine and they finish smoking, at least they should speak some sense small; the fact that they smoke wee and cocaine does not mean that when they get up they should be talking by-heart.’
He was so obsessed he did not allow the moderator to take control of the programme.
Further pushed to answer the specific question he was asked, the NDC Deputy General Secretary said, ‘I am telling you that what they are saying it’s only someone who has taken weed or someone who has sniffed cocaine that will speak that way.’
Asked whether there was any element of truth in the allegation, Mr. Adams queried, ‘If there was an iota of truth in it, will I say that they talk like people who smoke wee or cocaine?’
Admission
He finally admitted, ‘Of course, we went to hold a meeting in Cape Coast,’ declining to tell how many people were in attendance.
That, he said, was because ‘when I attend meetings, I don’t take note of the numbers that attended.’
Kofi Adams also confirmed the meeting was meant for communicators of the NDC.
