P. AMPONGSAH of Obuasi wrote his name in the history books on Sunday when he won the prestigious 57th Asantehene Gold Cup Golf Tournament at the Royal Golf Club in Kumasi.

With a 150 gross score, Ampongsah pushed D. Dorkey and Daniel Ntim to the second and third positions respectively in the male scratch category to lift high the trophy at stake.

Ivorian national Vivian Kuame, with a 161 gross score, won the first position in the ladies scratch version of the competition which was sponsored by MTN, followed by Felicity Okyei Gyeabuor and Mary Kronborg.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, presented the glittering trophies to the deserving winners. Golfers that lived up to expectation also took home prizes such as DSTV decoders and other souvenirs.

Other winners on the day were Tony Yeboah, ex-Ghana striker and M.I. Oppong, who won the male and female categories of the scratch event.

Kojo Barnni won the professionals category with 296 gross and he took home a cash prize of GH¢8,000, followed by S.K. Klah who took home GH¢4,000 after finishing second with 297 gross.

Former Ashanti Regional Minister Animah Wilson won the ladies support competition with 70 net and Nana Osei Kwadwo won the men’s category with a score of 69 net.

In a speech, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said football was not the only way to sporting glory, noting that there were wider prospects in other sporting disciplines such as golf.

Otumfuo therefore urged the state and corporate institutions to develop lesser known sports including golf which have health and other advantages for the human body.

President of Royal Gold Club, John Owusu, debunked assertions that golf was a sport for the affluent in society, wishing the Asantehene a happy 64th birthday and 15 years on the throne.
