The WORLD Food Programme (WFP) has presented 12 computers and 15 grinding mills (valued at GH¢171,000) to various groups and their project implementing partners in the northern part of the country.
The donation formed part of WFP’s overall sustainability strategy to build the capacity of its implementing partners and empower its beneficiaries to become secure in food production.
The computers and accessories were presented to the Ghana Health Service, Ghana Education Service and Ministry of Food and Agriculture offices in the Northern, Upper East and West, Brong Ahafo and Volta regions, while the grinding mills were presented to 10 mother-to-mother support groups and five purchase-for-progress smallholder farmer groups.
Making the donation at Tamale, the Head of the Tamale Office of the WFP, Dr Abebe Hankore, said the computers were to help improve documentation and ensure timely reporting by cooperating partners.
He said the mother-to-mother support groups, which are groups of mothers who seek the services of the Ghana Health Service, would also use the grinding mills to generate income to take care of their babies.
He added that the women would also use the grinding mills to fortify the available cereals in their localities with micro food nutrients to ensure the proper development of their children.
“WFP believes that women are key to solving the problems of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition and has, therefore, been supporting women’s groups in food-insecure areas in Ghana over the past decade,” he stated.
“They have been empowered to diversify their income and move into other non-traditional income- generating sectors such as providing milling services for their communities,” Mr Hankore added.
