Time bomb in Tema; fuel tankers pose threat to residents

Residents of Tema are sitting on a time bomb because of the indiscriminate parking of fuel tanker vehicles around the Tema Oil Refinery.

That is the caution coming from the Ghana Burns Survivors Foundation.

The foundation is also concerned about what it says is the haphazard location of fuel stations in the area.

This week Joy FM is putting the spotlight on waiting disasters and begins with the Tema Oil Refinery area which was last week the centre of a fire outbreak that destroyed a number of pipelines.

Joy News’ Joseph Opoku Gakpo visited the area and reported the situation is precarious.

He said in front of TOR, tanker vehicles are parked on the shoulders of the road after they are loaded with fuel consignments to be dispatched to other parts of the country.

He said some of the vehicles are even repaired at the same location.

The drivers claim TOR has provided an alternative location for parking but that location is too small for them and the access route to the new location is too narrow.

With last week’s fire outbreak, residents fear any fire incident close to the tankers could be disastrous.

Per the country’s safety rules, any inflammable material must be put far away from homes and other residential facilities but that is not the case in Tema Communities 1 and 4. The tankers are parked right in front of homes and shops with people smoking right beside them.

The Founder of the Ghana Burns Survivors Foundation Davies Opoku Gyamfi believes the situation is a risk for an unprecedented fire disaster looming.

“We are dealing with vehicles which when naked fire comes into contact with can cause disaster.

“People are smoking along the side of the road and we think all is well?

Meanwhile, the Greater Accra Regional Minister Nii Laryea Afote Agbo who is also the MP for the Kpone Katamanso constituency said he will be liaising with the appropriate authorities to relocate the tanker drivers.
